Dance leotard, tights and more: the must-haves for budding ballet dancers

Welcome to our blog post about the essential ballet equipment! If you are just starting out in ballet, it's important that you have the right equipment. In this article, we'd like to introduce you to all the necessary items you'll need for your ballet adventure, so that YOU are optimally prepared:

1. Body/dance leotard:

Let's start with the centerpiece of the ballet wardrobe - the bodysuit or dance leotard. These versatile garments come in a variety of colors and cuts. You'll find that leotard colors and cuts change depending on your ballet level. It's important to follow your dance school's guidelines, as they will help you make the right choice and dress appropriately according to your progress.

2. Tights:

There are two main versions of ballet tights that you can choose between: Those with an opening on the sole and those that are closed. Tights with a hole are only needed if you dance with pointe shoes. Otherwise, you can easily get the tights without a hole. Regarding the color, women always require pink tights and men mainly need black tights.

3. Ballet slippers

You will mainly be able to choose between two materials of your ballet slippers: leather and linen. Leather is more stretchy than linen and requires more foot work to achieve a nice line. For this reason, leather ballet slippers are often recommended for children and beginners to help strengthen the foot through resistance. You can also choose between split or complete soles. As a beginner, it is advisable to opt for slippers with a whole sole, as they offer the foot more support. Later on, you can switch to split soles when you feel ready. When it comes to slippers, women wear pink or skin-colored slippers, and men wear black ballet slippers to match their tights.

4. Pointe shoes:

Pointe shoes - the holy grail of any ballet dancer. But before you dive into the world of pointe shoes, it is important to understand that they are not necessary until your foot is sufficiently strengthened. So if you are new to ballet, you don't need to get pointe shoes. The choice of pointe shoes is extremely individual, as different models vary in sole hardness, width, and material. To ensure that your pointe shoes fit your feet and level perfectly, we strongly recommend that you visit a dance store and get advice from professionals.

5. Hair equipment:

Hair is the crowning glory of any ballet look. A neat bun is a must in ballet. To achieve this, you need the right hair equipment. Let's start with a hair net that keeps your hair neatly together and should be plain, in the color of your hair. Bobby pins and hair clips are also essential to securely fix the bun and prevent any movement.

We hope this blog post has helped you get an overview of all the necessary ballet equipment. Our ballet starter sets for kids or adults make buying your equipment easy.
